Therassia Island

Therassia Island

Thirassia is the smaller part of the remaining original island forming the other side of the huge volcanic caldera to Santorini.

It is the large island that dominates the view from Santorini, making the caldera view so magical as it is thanks to this smaller island that we can perceive the full scale of the volcanic eruption in BC1,600. There are two small inhabited villages with a population of only 300 and one of the attractions of the island are the other two ghost villages, although there are hopes that these may be restored in the coming years. No less than 21 churches adorn the island and the monastery of the Formation of Mother of God (Koimisis Theotokou is a must see. Life here is much more tranquil and calm compared to Santorini and a day trip here is a great escape from the crowds. There are several options to get here ranging from simple ferries to luxury catamarans. More details available from this section of the website

Therassia Island is the smaller cousin of Santorini being the other main part of the island that survived the original eruption circa BC1,600.
