Bodiam Castle
Located in East Sussex surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, Bodiam Castle has been described as ‘the perfect English castle’. It was a brooding symbol of power for more than 700 years. Previously believed that to have been built as a defence against French invasion during the Hundred Years’ War, it is now thought to have been intended as a home for a Sussex knight. During the Civil War in 17th-century Parliamentary soldiers removed the roof to use as a base for Charles I’s troops. 200 years later the Bodiam Castle was restored by Lord Curzon who passed it to the National Trust in 1925 (charity looking after nature, beauty and history).
Panoramic views across the Sussex countryside can be enjoyed from the top of the towers. Visitors of all ages are captivated by this evocative medieval ruin, a place where you can let your imagination run free.
To the East is Great Dixter a 15th-century manor house, that was restored in 1910 and later here was created a magnificent garden with a blend of terrace and borders. This garden is one of the best-loved in England.
