Kemp Town in Brighton
Kemp Town is one of the Brighton’s liveliest, most colourful neighbourhoods and the center of the city’s LGBTQ community. The area takes its name from Thomas Read Kemp's Kemp Town residential estate of the early 19th Century, but the one-word name now refers to an area larger than the original development.
In Kemp Town you can find clutch of antique and vintage shops, delis, cosy pubs and laidback coffee shops. Here you can’t miss the elaborate copper dome of Proud Cabaret Brighton, that was originally built as a mausoleum by Sir Albert Sassoon in 1892, in the same Oriental – Gothic style as the Royal Pavilion.
Further East is Sussex Square, part of the grand Kemp Town Estate. The author Lewis Carrol was a regular visitor to №11, and it’s said that the tunnel that runs down to the beach from the Estate’s private gardens was the inspiration for the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland.
