Volk’s Electric Railway
Ride along Brighton's Seafront on 135-year-old electric railway, the oldest electric railway in the world still operating. The Volk’s Electric Railway route runs for one mile along Brighton seafront, with three stations where passengers can alight.
Volk’s Electric Railway, opened in 1883, is the first electric train in the country and the world’s oldest operating public electric railway. It provides a fun ride along the Brighton seafront from the pier to the marina in a season and takes about 12 minutes and can carry up to 80 passengers. Trains run frequently from March to October.
Volk’s Electric Railway was designed by Magnus Volk – inventor and pioneer of electrical engineering. He was born in Brighton in 1851 and he was also responsible for setting up the first telephone line in the city and installing its first electric lighting.
