The Lanes & North Laine
The Lanes is the core of the old fishing village from which Brighton evolved and is the oldest part of it. The maze of narrow alleys, completed around the middle of the 18th century, is full of independent shops and boutiques and forms the city’s most popular shopping district. It is great place to wander, with some excellent cafes and restaurants, and plenty of interesting independent shops and boutiques, including the long-established jeweller’s shops for which the area’s known.
If you are looking for the Brighton that’s bohemian, hip and slightly alternative, you will find it in North Laine, which is head north of The Lanes. Here you can find Jump the Gun, a gentleman’s tailor specializing in mod attire, the Beyond Retro vintage clothes market and retro wedding dresses. The North Laine is also home to some popular veggie-friendly places to eat.
Brighton has frequent train connections with London and towns in the southeast. Weekday mornings are best for shopping.
