Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle is one of Britain’s the most visited historic buildings and for many the world’s most romantic. Castle was continuously inhabited and its present appearance is the result of centuries of rebuilding and extensions. Originally established as Norman fortress, it has followed the fashions of the times, going from fort to the comfortable Tudor-style mansion we can see today.

The enormous Leeds Castle is named after the local village-resembles a fairy-tale palace and started it’s days as a Saxon manor house. It was converted into a Royal Palace by Henry VIII, who loved the castle and visited it to escape the plague in London.

In 2019 Leeds celebrated it’s 900th anniversary. It has been continuously inhabited all 9 centuries , and what is unusual that Castle has been owned by six medieval queens, that is why it is often referred  as “Lady Castle”. Many monarch’s wives and consorts have bustled along these splendid corridors.

In 1926 Leeds Castle caught the eye of Anglo-American  heiress  Lady Baillie, who lived here for 50 years, entertaining guests from Charlie Chaplin to Noel Coward. Lady Baillie upgraded many of the rooms in the 1920s and 30s, which makes it difficult to tell the originals from the reproductions. In 1974 it was passed by Lady Baillie  into the hands of a charitable trust.

Leeds Castle is one of Kent’s  unmissable sights. Beginning life around 1119 , it has had a chequered history and is now run as a commercial concern, hosting conferences, concerts and special events with a branch of a zip-lining treetop adventure park. Its great place to bring children too; they will love the animal enclosures, playgrounds, adventure golf course and little green train that takes you up to the castle.
