A Driving Tour Penwith

A Driving Tour Penwith

A Driving Tour Penwith passes through a spectacular, remote Cornish landscape, dotted with relics of the tin mining industry, picturesque fishing villages and many prehistoric remains.

The magnificent coastline varies between gentle rolling moorland in the north and the rugged, windswept cliffs that characterize the dramatic south coast. The beauty of the area, combined with the clarity of light, has attracted artists since the late 19th century.

The Driving Tour length is 50km (30miles), with its  start point in Zennor and finish point in Botallack Mine. The highlights of your driving tour are:

  • The carved mermaid in the church at Zennor recalls the legend of the mermaid who lured the local squire’s son to her ocean lair.
  • One of the many prehistoric monuments, the chambered tomb Lanyon Quoit is visible on the left from the road to Madron.
  • The gardens at Trengwaiton are noted for the exotic plants and trees. For stunning views across the glorious gardens follow magnolias, rhododendrons and camellias up to the terrace at Trengwaiton and towards Mount’s Bay.
  • Newlyn, Cornwall’s largest fishing port, gave its name to a school of artists founded in 1880s. Examples of their work can be seen in the art gallery here.
  • The Bronze Age stone circle Merry Maidens is said to be 19 girls turned to stone for dancing on Sunday.
  • Land’s End is England’s most westerly paint and noted for its dramatic and wild landscape. A local exhibition reveals its history, geology and wildlife.
  • Derelict engine-houses clinging to the cliffside at Botallack Mine are a vivid reminder of the region’s former industry of tin mining.

By the way, interested to know, that Cornwall has its own language. Its not widely spoken but is taught in some schools.
