Step back in time at Billesley Manor, home of noble families and a favourite haunt of William Shakespeare.

1582 was a memorable year for Sir William Shakespeare, he visited Billesley Manor twice. First, as a quiet retreat to put pen to paper and compose his 20th play, the comedy "As you like it". Later in the year, he visited again for a more romantic reason as it is rumoured that he married Anne Hathaway in the Church of All Saints within the estate grounds.

Today Billesley Manor celebrates its literary and romantic past by offering personal and welcoming hospitality to its guests. The decor is traditional with quirky touches expressing a subtle sense of humour intended as a signal to guests that you are welcome to relax and enjoy yourself. There are open fireplaces throughout the hotel and many rooms also benefit from these attractive period features. Take time during your stay for a quiet moment of reflection sitting at the very place where Shakespeare says to write, or stroll through the incredible topiary gardens, who knows you may yourself write a famous sonnet.

The attractive hotel rooms are spread across the original Manor House, across attached cottages and converted barns. For a special occasion stay as Lord & Lady of the Manor in the Shakespeare Suite.

Architecture

The stone build dates back to 1603, however parts of the structure date back much further to 1327 when the house first took shape in a wood timber construction and some of the ancient beams still remain. The interiors today retain their historic charm however have been updated to add a modern and quirky sense of humour, which is fitting to its most famous guest; William Shakespeare is known to have written his 20th play - As you like it!
