By the Middle Ages this fishing small town was famous for it’s seafood and even now it is depended on its commercial harbour and seaside tourism.
Nowadays Whitstable is the prettiest of the old fishing towns of the North Kent, with brightly painted buildings, atmospheric alleyways, a busy little harbour and long shingle beach lined with colourful huts. Plenty of lively restaurants specialize in local sea food. Fishermen, artists, yachties and foodies rub along here. The sense of community and tradition is strong in Whitstable.
Town is popular for its Oyster Festival, that traditionally takes place each July since Norman times, and it is considered to be one of the southeast's top gastro event.
Whitstable is great place simply to hang out, with a busy little harbour and an attractive High Street lined with independent restaurants, delis and shops.
