RHS Garden Wisley

RHS Garden Wisley

Wisley is the historic home of the RHS and houses one of the largest plant collections in the world. The gardens delight through every season: enjoy swathes of bulbs and blossom in spring, unforgettable mixed borders and roses in summer, autumn’s bountiful colours, and frost-sparkled walks in winter.

Established in Victorian times to cultivate “difficult” plants, RHS Garden Wisley, given  in 1903 to the Royal Horticultural Society- the UK's leading gardening charity, is still today a working and demonstration garden, experimenting with new plants and cultivation techniques.

From its beginnings, Wisley has been about plantsmanship and experimentation, and it continues in that spirit today.

Its sheer size-240 acres (960 meters)- means it remains uncrowded even in summer; it is also, with its trails, woodlands and lakes, the kind of garden that even non-gardeners can enjoy.

What to visit:

  • Glasshouse (40ft-high) with 3 climatic zones teeming with rare and exotic plants, all set around waterfalls and pools.
  • Butterfly show with countless species of butterfly flutter around you.
  • Battleston Hill comes into its own in late spring, when you might catch not only the bluebells but also the firework display of rhododendrons, along with exquisite wisteria.
  • Also don’t miss the wildly colorful mixed borders, the summer rose garden and the historic rock garden and Seven Arches.
  • From the orchard, planted with hundreds of varieties of fruit trees, to the pinetum, with its mighty redwoods.

Why do people come to Wisley?
