Edinburgh

Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most handsome capitals. Famous for the art, every year it hosts Britain’s largest multimedia extravaganza, the Edinburgh Festival.

  • National Gallery. One the Britain’s finest art galleries, it worth visiting for its 15th-to 19th-century British and European paintings alone. Works by Raphael, Titan and Tintoretto accompany southern European paintings. The Weston Link is an underground complex that connects the gallery with the Royal Scottish Academy. It contains a lecture theatre/ cinema, shop, restaurant, café and an education room.
  • National Portrait Gallery. A unique visual history of Scotland is told here through the portraits of those who created it, from Robert the Bruce to Queen Anne. Portraits of other famous Scots include Robert Burns by Alexander Nasmyth. Memorabilia includes Mary, Queen od Scots’ jewellery and a silver travelling canteen left by Bonnie Prince Charlie.
  • National Museum. This purpose-built museum houses the Scottish collections of the National Museum of Scotland. Exhibitions tell the story of Scotland, the land and its people, from its geological beginnings right up to exciting events of today. A huge Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton guards the entrance to the natural world galleries and the 1930s Schmidt telescope is the centre piece of the Earth and Space gallery.
  • The Royal Mile. This historic stretch of four ancient streets (from Castlehill to Canongate) formed the main throughfare of medieval Edinburgh, linking the ancient castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. There are 66 alleys and closes that lead off the Royal Mile, some to hidden courtyards.
  • Camera Obscura. The lower floors of this building date from the early 17th In 1852, Maria Short added the upper floor and the Camera Obscura – a large pinhole camera that captures life in the city centre as it happens. A marvel at the time, this feat of Victorian craftsmanship still astonishes modern visitors, and it remains one of Edenborough’s most popular attractions.
  • Museum of Childhood. This lovely museum is not merely a toy collection but a magical insight into childhood, with all its joys and trials. Founded in 1955, it was the first museum in the world to be devoted to the history and theme of childhood. The collection includes medicines, school books, clothing and uniforms.
