Getting to know Scotland

From the grassy hills of the Borders up to the Isle of Skye, and still further north, to the windswept shores of Shetland, the landscapes of Scotland are always exhilarating. Added to this are the nation’s cities, towns and villages, steeped in history and offering a welcome as warm as wee dram of whisky.

  • Edinburgh and Southeast Scotland. Full of cultural treasures, Edinburgh is gateway to Scotland. Beyond the Scottish capital, baronial mansions stand alongside ruins of historic abbeys and castles in the fertile farmlands and upland moors of the border country. It is the best for sightseeing, culture and art.
  • Glasgow and Southwest Scotland. Studded with Victorian and modern architecture, Scotland’s biggest city, Glasgow, buzzes with energy. A host of historic attractions dot the rolling hills and unspoiled coastline of Southwest Scotland, including a clutch of fortresses. It is the best for art, shopping and nightlife.
  • Central and Eastern Scotland. Encompassing wild uplands and tamer lowland landscapes, Central and Eastern Scotland is a patchwork of a farmland and forest, fringed by sand shores. Its cities have their own history, from the medieval splendor of Stirling Castle to the industrial heritage of Dundee. Stunning Loch Lomond and the Trossachs offer a range of outdoor activities, while Royal Deeside combines natural beauty with regular splendor. It is the best for seafood feasts and royal heritage.
  • The Highlands and Islands. For many, the Highlands and Islands epitomize Scotland. This is a vast and sparsely populated region of innumerable lochs, glens and moors dotted with majestic clan castles and ancient standing stones. Hundreds of islands lie off the coast, many of them within sight of shore or an easy ferry ride from Oban. Inverness, the highland capital, is n excellent starting point for exploring Loch Ness and the spectacular Cairngorms, while Fort William holds the key to Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak. It is the best for whisky, outdoor adventures and majestic mountains.
